Oscar Sales, Jr. Broadway’s Creative Artists Bring The Mother Goose Musical to Nyack!December 23, 2002 (Nyack, NY) – The artists behind the theatrical hit The Prince and the Pauper create the next new family musical – Fiona, The Mother Goose Musical. Presented by the Helen Hayes Youth Theatre on January 11th & 12th and again on January 25th & 26th, Fiona, The Mother Goose Musical, will incorporate 70 children in three casts from Bergen, Rockland and Westchester counties. In a land filled with colorful characters with interesting stories, Fiona begins the search for her place in the world. As she begins her journey, she meets up with the Itsy Bitsy Spider, who tired of his role in life, wishes to become a computer programmer. As they travel the Land of Nursery Rhymes seeking the help of the wise old king, they meet many of the outlandish inhabitants of the kingdom – Jack Sprat, Bo Peep, Little Boy Blue, Wee Willie Winkie, Humpty Dumpty, Miss Muffet, the Three Blind Mice, and many more. Fascinated by their tales, Fiona starts chronicling their stories and discovers her true calling. With music and lyrics by Neil Berg and lyrics and book by John Patrick Schutz, Fiona, The Mother Goose Musical, is a show kids will love and adults will find extremely entertaining. With his collaborator, John Patrick Schutz, and fresh from his great success Off-Broadway with The Prince and the Pauper, Nyack resident Neil Berg, has gathered a creative team from some of New York’s hottest shows – Bat Boy: The Musical, The Phantom of the Opera, A Christmas Carol, Beauty and the Beast, and others. “I love stories about self-discovery,” says Neil. “I enjoy when people and characters discover things about themselves. I’ve written Broadway shows and family musicals, but I’ve never written a children’s show, a show that might help kids find their place in the world. As an artist, my life does not have the regular 9 to 5 structure. It is rather unconventional and it took me time to find my own voice. I want children to know that it’s ok to be different and it’s ok to look for a new story every day.” Joining Neil and John in this endeavor is an incredible Broadway team including:
“I am absolutely thrilled with this star-studded production team,” says Danielle Rudess, Youth Theatre Director/Producer. “I told the children in the cast how fortunate we are to have Broadway designers making our costumes, designing our set and directing the show. But, the kids don’t see any difference between the Helen Hayes Youth Theatre and Broadway, so in their eyes these bigwigs from Broadway are working right where they should be… at the Helen Hayes studios in Nyack, NY!” Fiona, The Mother Goose Musical will perform Saturday & Sunday January 11th and 12th at 2pm and 7pm, and on Saturday and Sunday, January 25th and 26th at 3pm. Tickets are $10 and can be obtained by calling the HHTC box office at (845) 358-6333 or (201) 358-6065 or by visiting our web site at www.hhtco.org |

Sales, Jr. 845/358-2847 ext. 21 (ph) 845/358-6846 (fax) oscar@hhtco.org SHOWTUNE THE JERRY HERMAN SONGBOOK A NEW MUSICAL REVUE DEBUTS IN NYACK Nyack, NY (September 3, 2002) – The life-affirming optimism of Broadway legend Jerry Herman is presented with a fresh new voice. Conceiver Paul Gilger showcases both the songs made famous, and reveals the lesser-known riches from the Jerry Herman canon. SHOWTUNE re-discovers songs from MACK AND MABEL, DEAR WORLD, THE GRAND TOUR, MILK & HONEY, Jerry’s contributions to A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD, A NIGHT IN THE UKRAINE, and takes surprising turns with the hit parade of songs from the Tony Award-winning musicals: HELLO, DOLLY!, MAME, and LA CAGE AUX FOLLES. SHOWTUNE hits a chord that resonates – a blend of showbiz excitement and emotional authenticity found at the heart of the American musical. SHOWTUNE kicks-up its heels with lyrics that will celebrate and embrace both the human comedy and drama of life. The cast of seven is led by Broadway veterans, Donna McKechnie and Martin Vidnovic. At the helm is Tony Award-nominated choreographer Joey McKneely in his New York directorial debut. Performances will take place at the Helen Hayes Theatre Company from October 12-27, 2002. SHOWTUNE is produced in association with JMS Productions, Inc., Jennifer Sanchez, Producer, and is sponsored by LeCroy Corporation. Jerry Herman burst onto the Broadway scene with MILK & HONEY in 1961. Then came HELLO, DOLLY! in 1964, MAME in 1966, and DEAR WORLD in 1969. With DEAR WORLD, he was the first Composer/Lyricist to have had three musicals running on Broadway simultaneously. Mr. Herman continued his Broadway career with MACK AND MABEL in 1978, THE GRAND TOUR in 1979, and LA CAGE AUX FOLLES in 1983. Though, a recipient of numerous awards including the Tony, Grammy, Drama Desk, Variety and a Johnnie Mercer Award, Mr. Herman says, “I am most proud of having written songs that have lives of their own outside of their shows.” Best known for her Tony Award-winning performance as Cassie in the original Broadway production of A CHORUS LINE, Donna McKechnie has performed in numerous productions on and Off-Broadway including: HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING, FOLLIES, CAN-CAN, COMPANY, STATE FAIR, SONDHEIM: A MUSICAL TRIBUTE, ON THE TOWN, STATE FAIR and PROMISES, PROMISES. Her one-woman musical celebration, INSIDE THE MUSIC, was recently released on the Fynsworth Alley record label. Martin Vidnovic received a Tony nomination for his work in BRIGADOON and won a Drama Desk Award for his role as Nick in BABY. Mr. Vidnovic’s other Broadway credits include: HOME SWEET HOMER, THE KING AND I, OKLAHOMA!, GUYS AND DOLLS, A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING and Disney’s KING DAVID. Conceived by Paul Gilger, an award-winning Architect residing in California, SHOWTUNE, will be directed and choreographed by Joey McKneely, whose Broadway credits include SMOKEY JOE’S CAFÉ, Cy Coleman’s THE LIFE and George C. Wolfe / Michael John LaCuisa’s WILD PARTY. James Followell, whose credits include FOREVER PLAID, OIL CITY SYMPHONY, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, the N.Y.C. GAY MEN’S CHORUS, and well and numerous cabaret luminaries will serve as musical director and vocal/piano arranger. Joining Ms. McKechnie and Mr. Vidnovic in the cast are: David Ayers, Sandy Binion, Paul Harman, Russell Arden Koplin, and Bobby Peaco. Jennifer Sanchez was the Associate Managing Director for two seasons at the San Francisco Chamber Theatre Company and later went on to produce Jerry Herman’s BEST OF TIMES (the original incarnation of SHOWTUNE) in San Francisco with subsequent productions in London. In association with Music Theater International, the Helen Hayes Youth Theatre will present newly reworked presentations of Meredith Willsonís The Music Man and Frank Loesser and Abe Burrows' Guys & Dolls. Full of all the humor, music and magic of their Broadway counterparts, these one-hour programs are performed by the talented young Youth Theatre members from Bergen, Rockland and Westchester Counties. The Music Man, Meredith Willson's charming musical about
growing up in a small Iowa town, is full of unforgettable melodies and
show stopping songs -- "Goodnight My Someone," "Ya Got Trouble,"

a con-man who --in order to sell band instruments--convinces the citizens
of River City, Iowa that he can teach their children to play in a
magnificent marching band. But Hill doesn't count on falling in love with
the town librarian, and instead of skipping town before the instruments

Sky eventually is able to convince Sarah to join him. To Sky's shock, he ends up falling in love with Sarah. When he returns back to New York, he bets all the members of the floating crap game that if he wins his roll of the dice, they will all have to go to the mission. If he loses, he will give them each a thousand dollars. He ends up winning and all the gamblers end up visiting the mission and repenting their sins. Full of musical classics -- "Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat," "Luck Be A Lady" "Take Back Your Mink," 'the Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game." Lee Gifford To Star In The Hot New Mystery-Comedy THUMBS World Premiere at HHTC on March 9, 2002 Nyack, NY (January 25, 2002) –- The giddy humor and irresistible intrigue of the hot new mystery-comedy from Rupert Holmes, multiple Tony Award-winning creator of Broadway’s The Mystery of Edwin Drood and the Edgar Award-winning Broadway chiller Accomplice, will have its world premiere at the Helen Hayes Theatre Company on March 9, 2002, and will run through March 24, 2002. Provident Bank has generously agreed to be the corporate sponsor of THUMBS. “In light of the decrease in support for the arts in general during these difficult and unusual times, the generous sponsorship by Provident Bank is a wonderful recognition of the importance of theatre in our community,” says Tony Stimac, executive producer. “We are grateful for their commitment to the work we are doing.” THUMBS, a deliciously delightful mystery-comedy, will star a cast led by television and stage actress, Kathie Lee Gifford, former co-host of the incredibly popular Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, and another soon-to-be-announced comedic actress. Gifford received rave reviews for her most recent stage performance on Broadway where she delivered an extraordinary portrayal of an alcoholic wife in Stephen Sondheim’s Putting it Together. In her fifteen years on Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, Gifford garnered nine Emmy nominations as co-host and two as executive producer. Gifford was also the first woman ever to host the Late Show with David Letterman where she surprised her audience by performing an unforgettable satirical piece of self-penned material called “You Sell” about “tabloid hell.” She has starred on numerous television programs and has pursued a singing career by releasing numerous contemporary pop albums and lullabies under her own record label. Set in an isolated cabin in Vermont, THUMBS is the story of two equally clever women from two very different walks of life who will need all their wit and will to survive a cat-and-mouse game with a devious killer, the likes of whom has not been seen before. “In the tradition of stage thrillers, women have rarely had a large enough role to play,“ says playwright Rupert Holmes. “I wanted to create a mystery-comedy where women drive the story, and in THUMBS, the two main characters are intelligent, sharp, and often quite funny women. I hope that our audience will be kept guessing at every turn of our twisted tale right up to the final curtain. The full cast will be announced in the next few weeks and it promises to be a truly crowd-pleasing company.” Rupert Holmes became the first person in theatrical history to be the sole winner of Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score for The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which also won the Tony Award for Best Broadway Musical. The New York Drama Desk bestowed the identical honors upon Holmes and his musical. Its run on Broadway was followed by two national tours and major productions at London’s Savoy Theatre and The Kennedy Center Opera House. In addition to the Broadway thrillers Accomplice (starring Jason Alexander) and Solitary Confinement (a tour de force for actor Stacy Keach), Holmes’ most recent play, Say Goodnight, Gracie, based on the life of George Burns, won the coveted Carbonell Award for Best New Play of 2000 for its Coconut Grove Playhouse premiere and is slated for a New York City debut this August. Holmes is also creator and writer of American Movie Classics’ Emmy award-winning television series Remember WENN. Sponsored by Provident Bank, THUMBS is a production of the Helen Hayes Theatre Company. Performances begin on March 9 and run through March 24, 2002. March 9, 13, 14 –16, and 19-23, at 8:00pm. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE News CONTACT: Evelyn B. Leong Carolyn Izzo Integrated Communications (845) 358-3920 (ph) • (845) 358-3927 (fax) eleong@ciicnews.com HHPAC Ushers In Exciting New Changes In 2002 New Name, Season, Web site, And Logo Are Announced Nyack, NY (January 23, 2002) – The Helen Hayes Performing Arts Center, a nonprofit cultural organization, is unveiling several brand new exciting changes this month that will take the theatre both into the 21st century and back to its roots. While its mission to be the region’s leader in the production of first-class live professional theatrical entertainment with a state-of-the-art facility remains steadfast, HHPAC recognizes the importance of giving its community a clearer and more focused vision. This vision includes a new name, spring season, website, and logo. “Redefining who we are at this point in time will allow the theatre to truly serve our audiences who, I know, are theatre lovers,” says Tony Stimac, Executive Producer. “By offering fewer one-night, non-produced events in the next season, the theatre can put more energy and effort into producing higher quality theatrical productions, and at the same time, return to our original mission which has always been to be a landmark theatre company in the tri-state area. The tradition of excellence that Helen Hayes brought to her work in the theatre is identical to the challenge we whole-heartedly embrace daily. We acknowledge that we are not a performing arts center, but rather a fully realized theatre, and we couldn’t be more excited and committed to taking the theatre to the next level.” New Name – With its new name, the Helen Hayes Theatre Company, the theatre will focus on doing what it does best. HHTC will continue to produce high-quality, professional live theatrical entertainment and offer outstanding education and outreach programs. Says James MacArthur, Ms. Hayes’ son, “Mom would be happier with this. Her life was theatre.” New Season — HHTC’s new spring season is filled with must-see theatre. Opening our season on March 9 will be the world premiere of Rupert Holmes’ hot new mystery-comedy THUMBS, sponsored by Provident Bank. Set in an isolated cabin in Vermont, two equally clever women from two very different walks of life will need all their wit and will to survive a cat-and-mouse game with a devious killer, the likes of whom has not been seen before. In April, Susan Barksy’s Expectations, sponsored by The Journal News, replaces the earlier announced I’m Not Rappaport. Hilariously funny and touching, Expectations is the story of three women who face adventures (and the misadventures) of marriage and motherhood. Finally, the smash hit musical Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, sponsored by Butler International, will rock-and-roll into HHTC in June. Replacing Evita, Buddy will be filled with favorite tunes like “Peggy Sue,” “Maybe Baby,” and “Everyday.” HHTC was given the opportunity to be one of the first regional theatres in the country to present this high-energy, record-breaking musical sensation about one of the greatest musical legends of all time. Helen Hayes Theatre Company New Web site – Click on www.hhtco.org and find out about the latest news on shows and events, seating availability and other relevant information at HHTC. By February 22, 2002, theatre lovers will also be able to purchase tickets online, 24 hours a day, by simply clicking on “Buy Tickets”. New Logo – HHTC is pleased to unveil its new logo in conjunction with its new name. Helen Hayes was always enamored with the beauty, strength, and perfection of the rose and the new logo incorporates the majesty and drama of this flower into its new look. “Roses are, of course, my favorite…a rose is the most satisfying,” said Hayes. “It’s the most demanding, it offers a challenge. And it must be treated with respect.” This seemingly delicate yet enduring flower has become synonymous with Hayes. The Helen Hayes Theatre Company is a nonprofit cultural and educational organization dedicated to providing the highest quality theatrical entertainment, visionary programming, and educational programs in the tri-state area. Theater Presents HONK! Jr. Award-Winning Smash Hit Opens January 25, 2002, at HHPAC Nyack, NY (December 10, 2001) — Take a beloved fable like Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling, update it with some new characters, set the story to music, and what do you have? A sophisticated musical re-telling of a classic and always timely tale of difference, tolerance, and friendship that will please audiences, young and old alike. In January 2002, HHPAC is pleased to introduce a new version of Honk entitled Honk, Jr. to be performed by the HHPAC Youth Theater. Performances begin on January 25 and run through January 27, 2002. Last year, HHPAC’s production of Honk! was the first in North America and only the second in the world. Since then, other productions have been mounted in China, Japan, Australia, South Africa, Israel, Denmark and Sweden. Written by the British songwriting team of composer George Stiles and lyricist Anthony Drewe, Honk, Jr. is a story of hope, bravery and confidence in the face of adversity – timeless themes that are more important today than ever. With songs like “The Joys of Motherhood,” “A Poultry Tale,” “Warts and All,” and “Different,” Honk, Jr., touches the funny bone as well as the heart. Make no mistake though — this incredibly clever musical comedy is not just for children. In fact, when it opened in London in 2000, it received great critical acclaim from theater reviewers and won the coveted Olivier Award for Best Musical. Honk, Jr. begins with the birth of ducklings - all of them petite, yellow and graceful except for the youngest who is large, gray and awkward. Despite his name, Ugly, his mother, Ida, loves him dearly and tries her hardest to protect him from his tormenting brothers and sisters and ridiculing father. Lured away by a famished and foul-coveting Cat, Ugly sets on a whirlwind adventure during which he encounters a domesticated hen named Lowbutt, the “aesthetically-challenged” Bullfrog and a beautiful and generous swan named Penny who helps Ugly realize that his uniqueness is a gift to be shared with the world. The HHPAC Youth Theater cast is made up of young actors from Rockland and Bergen Counties. From Bergen are the following including Erich Bergen in the lead role of Ugly: Megan Ribar, Alexandra Severini, Matthew Ross, Emily Gardner, Lael O’Connor, and Ann Ohliger. Written
by the British songwriting team of composer George Stiles and lyricist
Anthony Drewe, HONK!, is a story of hope, bravery and remaining
confident in the face of adversity – themes with which Stiles and Drewe
are familiar. The duo has been writing together for 17 years, creating
several musicals none of which reached London’s larger venues or American
stages. But they have come close. Stiles and Drewe’s version of Rudyard
Kipling’s Just So Stories was optioned by Steven Spielberg for an animated
movie, Stephen Sondheim offered them creative guidance and Cameron
Mackintosh wanted to produce. Sadly, deals fell through and Just So
Stories successfully roamed through theaters in the English provinces.
However, the team persevered and the dedication paid off. HONK!,
has been the talk of London since it premiered at the Royal National
Theater in December, 1999. On February 12th 2000, HONK! made its
North American debut at the Helen Hayes. |

She was also the first woman ever to host the “Late Show with David Letterman.” She surprised her audience by performing a satirical piece of self-penned material called “You Sell” about “tabloid hell.” Gifford began a professional singing career at the age of 14. Last year she released an album for Universal Records, “Heart of a Woman” for which she co-wrote four of the songs.
